Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of the real media product?

I have created a directors commentary using examples from my own trailer, poster and website and comparing it with pre existing examples from the same genre that influenced me in production

Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For question 2 of my evaluation, I have created a multi media poster using Glogster. This allowed me to combine all my images, including examples from real media products, and embed our trailer video from youtube. I tried to create three columns to separate my trailer and 2 ancillary products, and then create links between them to show synergy across all three.

Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

For this question I used Videoscribe to create the visual mind map, whilst also using iMovie to edit the video with our focus group recording and included a voiceover to narrate

Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used piktochart to create an infographic which allowed me to display the range of all the media techologies I have used over the course of creating me trailer, from conception to evaluation.

Evaluation Process

For my evaluation I am trying to use as many different and interesting forms of media as possible, whilst still making them relevant to the type of question I am using them for.

Question 2
For this question I have decided to use 'Glogster' which is a website that allows you to make multimedia posters. I thought this would be efficient to use as over the combination of my main product and ancillary products I have videos, pictures and the combination of both on the promotional website I created. In this poster I can take examples across all three products and place them all together.

Question 3
I am using a tool called VideoScribe for this question, which creates a whiteboard type of video and can be seen as a mindmap at the end. For myself I have many different aspects to this question to brain storm because I have audience feedback from surveys, on social media, and on the different drafts of our trailer. I thought this would be an interesting visual aspect and I could spilt up my sections to answer, and because I have not used VideoScribe before it is a new for of media for me.

Question 4
I have used the infogram website 'Piktochart' for this question because I wanted to use a lot of images and icons to show the different hardwares and softwares I have used over all the stages. I also have found it handy to clearly split up the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages because infograms can be so visual.

Fourth Draft

Since our last draft, we made improvements to the second voiceover by re-recording it in the same room as we did the first one so that the audio quality was the same. We also added an inter title of "a story about illness, loneliness and misplaced friendships" and moved around and added clips so that these fell on moments that were relevant to the inter title. For example as you can see in this preview there is a clip of Izzy spinning and it says "and misplaced friendships" hinting that Izzy betrays her friendship with Ava.

Film Poster

The changes I made from the first draft of my poster to this final one has mainly been the images, and I used one from the footage that we got at winter wonderland. However all my text for the titles, credits and taglines have remained the same, apart from a few changes of colour

Third Draft

This is the third draft to our trailer and we tried to make changes to make the relationship with Jack more clear as well as Ava's illness as she stops attending school with Izzy. We did not feel there was much we could do with the footage we had so we just added a voiceover saying "And with my best friend and his sister confined at home, it was just me and Jack." I felt that this helped to show Ava starts to keep to herself and leaves Izzy lonely, especially with it being after the voiceover saying her illness affects her. The following clips also show Izzy and Jack together, and this hopefully tells the narrative that because it is just those two, they start to become closer.
Unfortunately the audio quality is different to the other voiceover and they do not sound similar, making it seem less professional.

Production Log

27th November: First take with Rosie, and extras Alex and Kym

2nd December: Went to different locations without our actors to shoot establishing shots

10th December: Shot 3 scenes with actors Lucy and Rosie in locations at my house: Alone in bedroom, phone call argument, Izzy at a party

30th December: Went to Winter Wonderland with our actors Lucy and Rosie to shoot. We thought this was a nice and different location as in our survey people said they wanted more interesting places instead of just school and home

5th January: Shot more establishing shots of home and the rain

11th January: Filmed school scenes with Lucy: Receiving a note from Jack in her locker, and crying in the toilet because she is alone at school and sad that Ava is unwell

9th January: Photoshoot for Magazines and poster

Editing Log

First Draft

This is the first draft for our trailer. We both did basic editing techniques such as cutting and trimming clips, muting the audio of our clips and choosing copyright free music to use. Although this does not include a voiceover, we do intend to have one from our main character Izzy as narration and therefore we want to add this to our next draft. After showing this draft to our teachers and peers we got feedback including:

  • Add captions to do with friendship/family for example to explain the story and make the length longer
  • Change the order of some clips to fit with conventions of a trailer
  • Move 'From the creators of 'Rosie'' to the beginning

Second Draft

As well as adding our voiceover, we applied the other improvements we received to our trailer which was mostly moving clips around. Something we did which I personally think is a huge improvement was making the clips under the voiceover a slower pace to convey the drama and sadness, and this fit well with the non diegetic sound. Comparing this to other trailers, I thought the slow motion adhered well with films of the same genre as 'The Fault in Our Stars' for example uses this technique in their trailer. We got more feedback on this draft including:

  • Make the relationship between the brother more clear
  • Explain more about Ava's illness
We had the option of making a draft without the brother to see if the narrative was easy to follow, but as this would remove a lot of our footage and take the time of our trailer down considerably, we decided against this. If we had more time to film with our actors then this may have been a good thing to do. However we thought of adding more voiceover or captions to explain that Izzy has lost one friend and wants to find another and this is something we will do in our next edit.

Poster Photoshoot

Poster Photoshoot gallery

On our Facebook page we have an album of the best photos we took at the photoshoot. I like that we had a mix of ones where the girls look happy and giggly, as well as dramatic to convey the sad tone of our film. While shooting we also took photos while our stars were laughing and joking around together to get the authenticity of their friendship.

These are a few examples of photos which we could not use due to the camera not being in focus and/or blurry because of the actors moving:

Website Log

To start my website I choose to use 'Wix' and used a blank template so everything is custom made by me. I then chose what pages I want to have on my website: Home, Story, Behind the scenes, Ava's scrapbook (an interactive page), and Gallery.
I started experimenting with what I can do to make the home page interesting, and from this I set a gif I made as a video background. I also attached social media icons and a menu to the header so that they can be clicked on from every page.
Next I started to work on the gallery page because I had a vision as to what I wanted it to look like. As I had already linked our instagram I thought that I won't just repeat the images but make new ones for the website so there is a lot of different content across all platforms. I took inspiration from 'Paper Towns' and 'Me and Earl And The Dying Girls' pictures to edit my ones in a similar fashion, having text and images overplayed to make it a cartoony style.

I have changed the look of how I want my website to be since planning my sketches because as an interactive feature I though I could make a page called "Ava's Scrapbook". This sounds quite vague but from doing my research other teen film websites have similar things of a feature completely unique to their website. For example with 'Paper Towns' there was a tab called 'Margo Machine' which I had no idea what it was until I clicked on it and saw it was an interactive tweet generator. Therefore this will entice users into using the websites interactive features. For 'Ava's Scrapbook' I hope to create an interactive youtube video where people can explore a scrapbook of Ava has made, showing her and Izzy's friendship. Youtube allows you to create annotations that you can click on and they take you to different parts of the video so hopefully I can do this so that people can go forwards and backwards through the scrapbook pages as they please.
To fit with this feature, I wanted the look of my whole website to look like a scrapbook and therefore I got images of scrapbook paper and edited them in my theme colours of lilac, orange and green to make them the page backgrounds.

I have worked a lot on my gallery page and I have found that editing my pictures fits into the scrapbook theme as it looks quite arty like mixed media. Further more, the gallery feature I have chosen lays out your images as if they are disposables in a pile, and it allows the users to rotate and move them, and so there will be a little bit of interactivity on this page also.

I made a lot of changes to my homepage and this the end result which I am really pleased with. I used a photo from our photoshoot and edited it to have a scrapbook texture as the background, making it cohesive with the other pages and the image looks more professional. I also added a banner with the title and a bit of text to fill the space, and the inspiration I got for this was from 'TFIOS' and 'Me and Earl and The Dying Girl''s websites. They both seemed to have  an animated style to them and therefore I think mine fits well with the genre.

The main interactive part of my website was a youtube video I made flipping through Ava's scrapbook. To this I made the scrapbook, recorded a video of me flipping through it, edited it together putting other footage in between, then uploaded it to youtube where I made annotations that link to different sections of the video. Therefore when the viewer clicks on them (turn page, last page or clicking a photo) they can go through the scrapbook as they please.
