Me and Earl and The Dying Girl - Poster Analysis
What I like about this poster for 'Me and Earl and The Dying Girl' is the tagline 'this is the poster where you meet'. Like many other taglines, it is directly talking to the audience, however it is unconventional as it referring to itself as a piece of constructed text and therefore makes it unique and stand out. It also introduces the idea that there may be other posters, and I know that there are and they all follow the same pattern of having a tagline which begins with 'this is the poster where'. This a cool tagline to have for an indie film, and as ours is going to be indie, I want my tagline to stand out and not be stereotypical otherwise I do not think it would be rememberable. Another tagline that is used at the top is 'A little friendship never killed anyone', and much like TFIOS, this pun relating to death is comedic and clever as it directly contrasts with the title about the girl being dying. It is also a known quote so it has already made itself rememberable and does the audience a favour as they have to put in just that little less bit of effort in our to remember it.
The colours play an important role in this poster, especially the orange because it is a contrasting colour amongst the blue and therefore it stands out. The creators have taken this to their advantage to use this as a highlight piece to pull out the most important information; the awards, the tagline and 'summer'. The awards show that this is a critically acclaimed film and so builds a good impression, the orange of the tagline makes it stand out even more and to read this before the title makes a cohesive sentence that can come across as very clever, and the date stands out in the rest of the text at the bottom so a viewer can know when to expect to see it in cinemas. I like the idea of having complimentary colours as a colour theme because they stand out against each other but still suit so there can be a nice looking colour palette made around it. For example in this poster, the colours all have a similar muted tone so they all looking fitting together, instead of some being very bright and some not.
Another unconventional and interesting thing that I like about this is that the characters are at a smaller ratio to the title and have been placed around and in it. Furthermore they have been placed next to their name so it is another way it ties into the clever idea of introducing the audience to the character, and also who is the main character (through the use of 'me') which tells us that it is his narration. It also creates a personal relationship with the viewer as it is as if they are being personally introduced to these people before they get to know them more. In a way it could spark the sense of politeness in a viewer, because they have been introduced they could feel as if they need to watch this film to get to know the characters more, and also they do not want to just get a little bit of information and nothing more, they want to know the whole thing. I like that our title has a characters name in it so similar to this the audience are already getting to know who Ava is and something about her character from how we present her on the poster, so we need to present her in an intriguing and interesting way to engage the audience so they come to watch the film.
A feature that is good to have on the poster, as well as relating it to the indie style is the film festival awards in the top left. The reef symbol is quite recognisable so it will catch the viewers attention and then they can go on to see that this film is award winning at sundance, which is a big festival that even non film fans will have heard of, and therefore it must be good. Even though my film is not real and will not have won any awards, I think this could be a good accreditation(?) to put on my film poster as it makes it seem authentic and shows it in a good light.
Overall I really like all the clever features that have been used in this poster to engage the audience as well as referring to itself as a piece of constructed fiction. Similar to the other indie film of the same genre, Submarine, I really like the minimalistic style of this poster because you can make something minimalistic while still being very unique and individual to the film, which helps it to stand out amongst other film posters you see at the cinema which can follow genre conventions a lot more.
The Fault In Our Stars - Poster Analysis
This is a poster for author John Green's novel adaptation of 'The Fault in Our Stars.' I think the star of this film that is represented on the poster is the characters. An aerial medium shot is used where both of them take up as much room in the frame as each other, which tells us that they are both equally important and are co stars rather than it being one main star. However the female is placed the correct way up for the viewer to see, which tells us that she is the one to look at first, and could be slightly more important. However I think the only reason she is more important is as it is from her perspective which I know from reading the book which is her first person point of view, and the trailer is also narrated by her. Other than this, the boy is the second person we look at, and from the affectionate position they are placed in, we can tell that this is a story focused on the love between them, and as it takes two people to have a relationship, they are both extremely important to convey this meaning in the poster. The placement of the characters is important for our poster as we have three main characters, and as that is odd, we will most likely need to have the most important or one we want to point of interest to be on first, in the middle. I think that this should be 'Ava', because all though the narrative does not always focus on her, she is a main part of the title (My Friend Ava) and therefore the viewer of the poster will need to know which one out of the three she is.
A convention of film posters that is used in this one is a tagline, this one being 'one sick love story', reinforces audiences assumptions that this is a romance. The adjective 'sick' gives a hint to the plot that they both have cancer, as also relates to the teen target audience as this is a positive adjective that they use in their vocabulary. I like this idea of having words that the target audience will understand because it seems more personal to them and makes them feel relevant, which is something that I would like to create with the tagline I use.
Like all the other campaigns I have seen for the film, as well as the book cover, the font of title has stayed consistent throughout, which makes it recognisable. If someone quickly walked past this poster than they most likely would be able to pick out what film it is for because they would have seen a bit of the title as it is placed in the lower middle bit of the poster where they are likely to see it. From this they can associated the font with the film and it will be on their mind. For my title, I want to use a fond that someone wouldn't find on the standard ones on their computer, and to look interesting so it will stand out amongst other film titles. If someone were to write something else in the same font, the desired effect is for someone to be able to recognise that the font is the one in my film title.
The line at the top 'Based on the New York times #1 best seller' I think will not be the first bit of information read first, because the title is the biggest and a lot of other text is placed straight under. however, when the spectator does get round to reading this they will be impressed by the credit the book has earned and therefore will trust the narrative to be good. With romance films, I definitely think it is the plot that drives the film over anything else and the fact that it is based on a story sells that this is a good narrative. Many other films of the young adult/teen/romance genre will be based on novels and although our film idea was not an adaptation, I could include a piece of text on my poster similar to this which shows the film was based off a piece of fiction. For example 'from the award winner author...' or 'based on the young adult spectacle...'. This type of text would also to be good to include information about awards from film festivals, or whether it was made by the same creators of another critically acclaimed film of the same genre, as it builds up a good reputation for the film before the audience may have even seen the trailer or anything else about it.
In the lower left and right, there are small grey bits of text that say '#TFIOS' and 'thefaultinourstarsmovie.com', linking the audience to areas where they can find out more. Their target audience will be able to understand the hashtag because teenagers are very active online, further including them in the campaign which compliments them so they have good opinions of the films marketing. The fact that it is small and grey means it does not stand out to much, which I think was a good decision because it is not crucial information, but it is still there for an interested viewer to read. Having something like this in a corner could be a good thing to use because I am going to have an online marketing campaign for my film so taking advantage of the poster platform means it gets it out to a further audience so they do not have to find us themselves first, and also ties all the marketing together. I think this is a feature that is becoming more popular on film posters with the growing age of digital technologies and therefore having it on my poster could show that our film is new and relevant to the current times, appealing to the audience of teenagers that are aspirers.
Last the release date is included right at the bottom, so that if a viewer has read everything then they are most likely interested to invest their time into it, and therefore this is the last bit they read and can get them excited to see it. 'June 6' is also a date which is mostly likely in the school holidays for American teenagers, so they will have more time to go to the cinema. What I can learn from this is to have a release date in a UK school holiday as our film also has a teenage audience and we will want them to be able to see it closest to the release date.
Ultimately I like all the features that have been used on this poster together to create a lot of information about the films release, as well as appealing a lot to the audience through the image and vocabulary. I think I can take away a lot about the framing of the subjects in the image, as well as having a clever tagline because the audience will think that it is clever and remember it.
Submarine - Poster Analysis
This is the poster for Richard Ayoade's film 'Submarine' which was his directing debut. It has quite a minimalistic design that seems to be aimed at an indie audience, with a clear colour primary colour scheme. I think the colours are the the most stand out thing about this poster, and the use of all three primary colours create a sense of simplicity and things being raw. In my opinion, the three colours do not have much relation to each other and have not been used together to spark one particular emotion, because they are all contrasting and can go into different tones and mixes but instead are just in their simplest forms. Blue connotes with sadness, red can represent love and passion, and yellow usually symbolises happiness, and I think these are the three basic human emotions that everyone feels, showing the audience that this is a narrative about people and relationships. I would like to use a similar technique for my film poster because our genre is a teen romance, we should use colours which represent the upbeat and energetic feel that these type of films tend to have, such as bright yellows and oranges. In this poster the colours are a lot more vivid than how we see them naturally, creating a sense of hyperreality and the fact that this may be an indie film because of the aesthetics. Furthermore, the first part of 'submarine' being yellow, could be a reference to the Beatle's song 'yellow submarine', and an audience of this poster will feel complimented of their knowledge and could be more keen to see the film for this reason. As I have watched the film, I know that Ayoade has put in many blue and red details to symbolise the characters, and I think that the poster has tied into the visuals of the film nicely, which is another thing I would like to take on board when creating my poster which relates to my trailer. Therefore, if someone finds just this poster aesthetically pleasing, the chances are they will probably enjoy the cinematography as well. Having a clear colour scheme throughout can make the film and marketing campaign cohesive as well as interesting to look at so it stands out amongst other mainstream films in cinema.
Other ways that the colour in this poster has been used to create meaning is in the blue tint just under half of the bottom. This looks like water and as it stops half way up the boys face, where he looks big eyed and worried, this creates a sense that he is submerged (much like a submarine), giving a hint as to what the film could be about. The blue rectangle shape sort of acts like a prop, and this a key thing I need to include in my poster because it can give a hint as to what the film is about without giving a lot of detail away. At the top under the quote are five stars, which are also in the same colour yellow as the 'sub' part of the title. Yellow is a positive colour and with the fact everyone knows five stars is a top review a film can get, a positive message is reinforced on the audience about this film. I would definitely like to show some sort of rating on my poster as it is a common feature of posters so it helps to make it look authentic, and I will want to show my product in the best way possible which is what all producers do when creating their marketing products. Overall the colours of this poster work well together to get a uniform and attractive looking poster which sparks a range of emotions on the spectator as well as hinting to how the main character feels in the film.
I think the quote 'The most refreshing, urgent and original debut the British film industry has seen in years' is effective to place at the top of the poster as it is the first thing that audiences read, besides the title, and therefore is the most important information to what the film is actually about. The quote itself uses many attributive adjectives, showing that this must be an engaging and thought provoking film. For a film loving niche audience, this will attractive them as they will want to be spectators and take away opinions they can discuss after. Whereas for a mainstream audience, this is still a big pull for them as there are positive connotations from the fact the quote is most likely from a reliable source that knows what they're talking about, and therefore this film must be good and worth spending their money on. I think the reference to 'the British film industry' is a key one because the target audience of this will British, and therefore they may agree that the film industry in this country is not as exciting or as much of a spectacle as they wish it was and so this film stands out.
Although there are not many names on this poster, this reinforces the fact that it is aimed at more of an indie audience because they are not into a stellar cast. This brings out connotations of indie films vs big blockbusters and perhaps shows that this film is more narrative and film making technique based and so will have more substance to it for a spectator to discuss, and not just a film that was designed to make a huge profit. For a broader audience however, the directors name 'Richard Ayoade' may stand out because he was on the Channel 4 show 'The IT Crowd' and he is known for being funny and playing a humorous character. Therefore he is the star power when it comes to his own film, and most likely the humour will be good British humour that the national target audience will be fans of. As there are no stars in our film, Submarine can sort of relate to ours, even though there are people recognisable, especially to the British Film industry. So therefore, when putting our stars names on our poster, we can include adjectives that could suggest that our target audience of teenage girls would know them.
In conclusion I think that this is a very interesting and attractive poster that intrigues audiences and therefore will bring in a wider range of people that may not have thought about investing into the product at first. It's use of colours is definitely something that I think I can emulate will the fact it represents emotions and has a big reference to the colour scheme in the film. I also think the minimalistic style shows that posters do not need to be big and flashy to be engaging and also represents the style of what film it is. As our film will most likely be an indie that is entered into film festivals, I think using minimalism is a good way to present this because it connotes with this genre of film.

Character Ideas
Ava:
Age 17, she is confident girl but also a bit of a trouble maker. She has a bright and positive personality which gives her a visible radiance and everyone can see that she is special. When she was little she had cancer, and recovering from it made her the strong person she is today, so when she gets it again everyone expects her to push through however she becomes weak and depressed instead.
Izzy:
Age 16, Ava's best friend since they were toddlers. She is shy and introvert, but can openly express herself with Ava as they know each other best. She finds it hard to get to know other people because she will not be the one to talk first, unlike Ava. When Ava is ill and stops coming to school, Izzy becomes down because she does not have any other friends to talk to, and therefore confides in Jack (Ava's brother) as he is the next closest thing to her. They begin a romance.
Jack:
Age 18, Ava's brother. He is the cool teen heartthrob at school and has a reputation for being a trouble maker like his sister. Although he is close to Izzy, he does not want to be associated with her at first when she is alone at school due to their difference in social status, but soon after he gets a soft spot for her and they start a romance. Ava's illness affects Jack greatly at school as he rebels more, has a lower mood and his grades get worse.

Paper Towns - Website Analysis
On the left hand side there are three tabs which allow the user to interact more. They are split up by colour and font size, specifically the snapchat one is interesting to me as the colour is the same as the app and the font is different. I think having three is a good number because it shows there is more interaction but does not bombard a user with loads of things to do at once so they can smoothly work their way through. Further more the right hand tab, which is a gif (something that is a new and visually interesting to look at) will most likely link to much more things as story connotes with adventure and therefore exploration of the website, whereas this homepage seems more for the promotion and being able to buy the product. Also, the fact that is it at the bottom left tells me this is the last thing the producers wanted users to click as people read for left to right and work their way down. So once they are done on this page that will be the last thing they see and click on and can be taken to much more fun content that relates more to the narrative of the film. The difference in aesthetics of these tabs will appeal to different types of audiences and they will want to explore different things. Such as the main target audience of teenagers may click on the bottom left first because they see it has the stars on, which are celebrities they recognise, and because the characters relate to the narrative, this is what they are interesting in rather than ordering the dvd straight away. While it is important for me to include a lot of tabs on my website, I have learnt to that if I am going to make them big like these ones then it is better to have less so it is not over bearing, but if I want to include a lot more options at once then having a simple look is better (such as while TFIOS homepage).
Both TFIOS and Paper Towns relate to each other, with this page having the text "From the author of The Fault In Our Stars" at the very top, promoting this film as well and suggests that an audience who liked that film will like this one. They have used the font that is specific to the previous film which makes it personal and stand out, much like how the Paper Towns title has a font which also looks like handwriting, giving it a unique look. It also makes it seem professional as it shows all the thought and personalisation that has gone into it instead of picking a pre made font that anyone can get access of. For my film title I should find a way to create a personal font that could be well recognised such as how many films have famous looking titles such as Jurassic Park and Back To The Future, because all though these are not of the same genre as my film, it builds an image for the film.
Me and Earl and The Dying Girl - Website Analysis
This homepage is very interesting because as soon as you click on it, it becomes interactive without you needing to do anything. This is because the background image which takes up the whole screen is a series of short clips from the film in a random order, and there is a repetitive music which plays (and you have the option to mute it). This draws the viewer in because it creates atmosphere and they will most likely spend time watching the round of videos all the way through before they click on anything else on the page, so they will already know if they are interested in the film by what they have been shown. I know that if I included videos that play automatically like this on my page, I would choose shots that are interesting and enticing so they show a positive representation of my film because I will want as many people to watch it as possible.
There are a lot of links to click on on this page, such as the social media icons, including the follow button for tumblr (similar to TFIOS with the fact is has been made on a social media platform) which allows for multiple options as audiences will be active on a range of social medias and therefore there should be atleast one which they can follow and will often see the content that is posted. For my film promotion I am going to create a range of social medias to target my audience of young people as they are prominently active online, and also allows for easy marketing because the content can be retweeted/reblogged so the users are sharing it with their followers which spreads it further.
As the background is constantly changing, there is not much of a colour scheme because it is just natural colours that are in the shots and therefore the text and shapes on top show me that the main colours are white and orange. White has most likely been chosen because it will stand out over all the background shots so that the title and text will always be visible for the website viewers to read. Orange has only been used twice so it is eye catching and links to the most important things, which is to buy the film and watch the trailer for it. This tells me that the main purpose of this website is the selling of the film because these may be the only links that someone who briefly visits the website and does not interact much may see and click on. I know that on my homepage I will want links for buying the film or to what platform audiences can view it on such as cinema showings or if it was on Netflix etc.
Another image I can see are the age rating, which seems like it is on there for legal reasons and gives it a professional look, and this is something that I can emulate to make my website look authentic. There are also film festival awards in the reef logo, which firstly tells me, as someone who is a film enthusiast, that this is an indie film because it has been in film festivals. Much like how it appeals to me, this could appeal to a niche audience of indie film fans because they will recognise the film festivals and the fact is has won awards shows that the talented film making has been recognised and accredited by other professionals in the film industry. To more of a passive and mainstream audience, this is still appealing because winning awards gives the film more of a support that it is good and worth watching. As my film will also be an indie, film festival awards will be the type of ones I include on my webpage, rather than having an Academy Award or Bafta, and it also seems more believable.

TFIOS - Webpage Analysis
This is the homepage for 'The Fault In Our Stars' website for the film. As I can see in the top right hand corner, the website was created using the social media site Tumblr, and there are also little icons to other social media websites that the film is being marketed on. I think the marketing of the film has obviously deliberately chosen this platform to appeal and interact with their target audience as it is a feature of Web 2.0 and will commonly be used by teenagers and young adults, who will be the ones targeted in the films promotion. The fact that users can follow the website on a blogging and social media type of website means that they will be notified about new posts, instead of having to revisit an external website to keep up to date with the film. It also has the feature for users to reblog, which allows the audience to essentially help with promotion, as they are encouraging the two-step flow in a digital way, so that their followers can see the films content if they have reblogged it. Using a social media website such as Tumblr as a platform for my webpage could be good as my target audience will be similar to that of this film, and I know as a teenager myself that this age group is one of the most active online and on social media it is easy for the users to come across the film instead of having to search it up themselves.
The top two thirds of the page are taken up by a picture, which is a photo of the two stars with an illustration as the background. Having it the largest box on the page makes it eye catching so that it is the first thing a user will look at and therefore this space needs to be used effectively so they will make an audience that is just interested in looking at the picture, want to see or buy the film. I think using illustrations makes it unique and aesthetically pleasing, and the white highlight of the cannula draws attention to the fact that this is an important prop and therefore tells the audience that a big part of the story is her illness. The two main stars will help a viewer to judge whether this is the type of film for them, and therefore having a boy and a girl in an affectionate pose signifies that this a romance genre. The background colours of the image are mostly dark, highlighting the main stars even more, and the fact that they are in the centre makes them the focus. Whether my image of my film stars is large or small, I need to make them stand out from the background so that it is clear they are the focus.
Picture to title ratio is very similar as the title is a almost as big as the two stars, so that it still looks large next to them and they are the centre of attention on this page, however when looking at the homepage as a whole, it is not very big or eye catching. For me as a viewer, my eyes were immediately drawn to Hazel and Gus and then I drifted my attention to the title and the other interactive features. Therefore when designing my webpage, I think having a title on the main image and near the stars is a way for the audience to receive a lot of information without shifting their gaze all over the place which will make them dislike the website as they have to put in a lot of effort. The first thing that will attract their attention must give details about the name of the film, who it follows, and have a clue as to what the narrative is about such as in a prop.
There are many tabs which link to other pages, ranging from the selling of the film (soundtrack and buy now) to many interactive features, some of which are new and exclusive to this film in particular (my little infinity). This gives a user a lot of content to do while they are on the website and therefore they could be on it for a while and the more time they spend on it than the more they will be persuaded to watch or buy this film. I think I need to come up with a few interactive features that are particular to my film, as well as having the conventional tabs to a website, because it will make my website and film memorable and fun for a user to use. If the features are new and exciting then there is a chance they will tell their friends to go on the website, promoting the film even more.
The colour scheme of this website is similar to all the other promotional materials I have seen for this film, showing that there is a consistent one across the platforms and makes all the material cohesive. It is clear to see that the main colour they have chosen is blue, and the only other colour (apart from the ones in the photograph) is white, with the exception of the yellow stars. I think these have purposely been made yellow which is contrasting to the blue to make them stand out, especially since they relate directly to the title. Even the tumblr logo is blue so it fits with the colour palette for this page. Although the yellow is contrasting, the tone of the colours are similar so that they fit well together and do not look unattractive. For my own film I need to chose a colour palette that looks nice together and has relation to the colours used in the film. I also think that having a colour that stands out amongst the rest would be an effective feature so the image that is highlighted with this is eye catching, and therefore I need to make an appropriate selection for what I use the contrasting colour for because it should be important to the film.
The other main bit of text on this page at the bottom is promotion for 'Paper Towns' which is a film very similar to this as they share production companies and they are both books by the same author. This promotion is effective to have on this predeasing films website because it tells audiences that if they liked TFIOS then they may like Paper Towns. Something similar that I could include in my films website is to have a text which says "From the makers of" as it a conventional feature of film websites and can show the link between films of similar genres and how the same audiences are being targeted.
Mood Board
1. The first image I have chosen represents our two main characters, Izzy and Ava, at a young age. In the premise of the film they have been best friends since a very young age so therefore I thought that we could include some shots of them growing up together at the beginning of the trailer. Also, with it just being those two girls and no one else it shows how they are inseparable and come as a duo rather than individual or in a bigger friendship group.
2. This is an image of a scrapbook which I decided to include because I think a scrapbook or photo album dedicated to the girls friendship could be an interesting prop to have recurring in the film and the trailer. As Ava passes away, Izzy could come back to this item to relive the times that they had together. It is very personal and therefore gives Izzy comfort because it is one thing of Ava that she can hold on to.
3. A location that I had in mind was the Thames in Kingston because it is near so it would be easy to get to, and could be used as an establishing shot. I think it would be interesting to shoot a long shot from one side of the river either looking at either the girls, or Izzy and Jack sitting together.
4. Maisie Williams is the type of actress that I can imagine would play Ava as she has quite an interesting look and is not a stereotypical girl, and therefore manages to grab peoples attention so audiences are attracted to her.
5 and 6. I thought this scene from 'Paper Towns' where the main love interests are looking over a city at night was very romantic and this could be something we do in our film using the South Bank or somewhere else in London at night as a similar romantic location.
7. As our main characters and target audience are similar ages of teenagers I thought it could be good to include images in our trailer that teenagers use and recognise such as snapchat. Although the aspect ratio of front cameras do not fit trailer conventions, I thought that this would make it more interesting and stand out, and could also make our characters seem more realistic so they are easy to empathise with.
8. A shot like this would be clear to show the deterioration of Ava's well-being and there a props such as the hat which show how the cancer is very prominent now, and because she has had chemotherapy she will be feeling very sick.
9. I liked this use of editing in TFIOS where the love interests are texting each other and the messages come up of screen for the audience to read. Personally I think visual storytelling is better than dialogue, and the use of messages makes it relate-able to audiences as this is how people often communicate in modern day and involves them if they read it. I also like that the form of the message is not the typical format such as an imessage, but has its own visual style that is similar to how the rest of the film is promoted, and I think that this is something we can emulate.
10. One of the locations we want to use is Ava's bedroom, but we want to make it look better and nicer than regular bedrooms to show that Ava is special and has a captivating personality so her bedroom should represent this. I thought the idea of lights fits with this as she lights up a room (before she becomes unwell and has a brighter personality).
11. I really like the look of having home footage because it can help to show that it is the young version of the main characters instead of just a separate actor. We found an app called VHS cam which filters videos to look like old camcorders, and we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to use it by recorder two little girls who are the main characters when they are younger, showing they have been best friends since a young age.
12. Like number 8, Izzy could also be affected by Ava's illness as it upsets her. I like this example because it clearly shows she is in school and perhaps hiding so she can cry, an our idea is that Izzy starts to be alone and school and not have any friends since Ava stays at home.
13. We could have scenes of Izzy and Jack together messing around. I also like that this example is in the woods and secret, which is something we could emulate because Jack is Ava's brother so he may want to hide the fact he is hanging our with Izzy from her.
14. This is an actress that I thought would be suitable for Izzy if we were doing a big production. I have seen her work with Maisie Williams before in 'Cyberbully' and I thought they would be good together as they have the natural chemistry of best friends.
15. For the mise-en-scene in Ava's room, we could have cards and balloons and gifts that show people are sympathising her, and often people who are unwell are brought gifts like this.
16. In this shot from 'Submarine', I really like that the two are a silhouette with a sunset in the background. It could show that they are arguing as they are in the dark and the sun going down could be something to do with Ava has passed on as it seems very heavenly. This would be a scene fairly close to the end of the film if we were too make a feature length.
17. We could include establishing shots of suburban houses like this to show how the girls live fairly normal lives. I also thought we could have a window that you can see from the outside is lit up with fairy lights, conveying that it is Ava's room.
18. Because of youth involvement with technology today, we could try and include a shot of them face-timing each other as this is something close friends will do often. It also is relate able for our target audience. I think we could place this at the start of the trailer when we have a montage of snapshots, front camera footage and other shots to show that they are best friends.
19. This is an example from TFIOS trailer where one shot fades into another, They are slow motion actions of the parents running to Hazel and taking her to hospital. I like the use of these editing techniques together as it shows the drama and I think it could be an important feature to use in our trailer to convey the genre.
20. Many teenagers will go to parties so a scene we could have in our film is where the three, or just Izzy and Jack, end up going to the biggest party of the year. Although a big party/prom location may be hard to set up but it would be achievable if set up like a house party and we use our friends as extras.
21. Ansel Elgort is an actor that I thought would be suitable for the role of Jack because he is seen as the heartthrob, and Jack has a bad boy role at school so he attracts lots of girls. The actor is also older than the other two I would have cast, and has been in many teen dramas including: TFIOS and a cameo in Paper Towns
22. I like this shot in 'Me and Earl and The Dying Girl' because her smile and pink wig show that she is positive and full of personality despite that she has cancer and has lost her hair. This will happen to Ava and I think having a brightly coloured wig can convey her loud personality even when she is not feeling well, while also fitting with the conventions of films where someone has cancer.
