Mood Board

1. The first image I have chosen represents our two main characters, Izzy and Ava, at a young age. In the premise of the film they have been best friends since a very young age so therefore I thought that we could include some shots of them growing up together at the beginning of the trailer. Also, with it just being those two girls and no one else it shows how they are inseparable and come as a duo rather than individual or in a bigger friendship group.

2. This is an image of a scrapbook which I decided to include because I think a scrapbook or photo album dedicated to the girls friendship could be an interesting prop to have recurring in the film and the trailer. As Ava passes away, Izzy could come back to this item to relive the times that they had together. It is very personal and therefore gives Izzy comfort because it is one thing of Ava that she can hold on to.

3. A location that I had in mind was the Thames in Kingston because it is near so it would be easy to get to, and could be used as an establishing shot. I think it would be interesting to shoot a long shot from one side of the river either looking at either the girls, or Izzy and Jack sitting together.

4. Maisie Williams is the type of actress that I can imagine would play Ava as she has quite an interesting look and is not a stereotypical girl, and therefore manages to grab peoples attention so audiences are attracted to her.

5 and 6. I thought this scene from 'Paper Towns' where the main love interests are looking over a city at night was very romantic and this could be something we do in our film using the South Bank or somewhere else in London at night as a similar romantic location.

7. As our main characters and target audience are similar ages of teenagers I thought it could be good to include images in our trailer that teenagers use and recognise such as snapchat. Although the aspect ratio of front cameras do not fit trailer conventions, I thought that this would make it more interesting and stand out, and could also make our characters seem more realistic so they are easy to empathise with.

8. A shot like this would be clear to show the deterioration of Ava's well-being and there a props such as the hat which show how the cancer is very prominent now, and because she has had chemotherapy she will be feeling very sick.

9. I liked this use of editing in TFIOS where the love interests are texting each other and the messages come up of screen for the audience to read. Personally I think visual storytelling is better than dialogue, and the use of messages makes it relate-able to audiences as this is how people often communicate in modern day and involves them if they read it. I also like that the form of the message is not the typical format such as an imessage, but has its own visual style that is similar to how the rest of the film is promoted, and I think that this is something we can emulate.

10. One of the locations we want to use is Ava's bedroom, but we want to make it look better and nicer than regular bedrooms to show that Ava is special and has a captivating personality so her bedroom should represent this. I thought the idea of lights fits with this as she lights up a room (before she becomes unwell and has a brighter personality).

11. I really like the look of having home footage because it can help to show that it is the young version of the main characters instead of just a separate actor. We found an app called VHS cam which filters videos to look like old camcorders, and we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to use it by recorder two little girls who are the main characters when they are younger, showing they have been best friends since a young age.

12. Like number 8, Izzy could also be affected by Ava's illness as it upsets her. I like this example because it clearly shows she is in school and perhaps hiding so she can cry, an our idea is that Izzy starts to be alone and school and not have any friends since Ava stays at home.

13. We could have scenes of Izzy and Jack together messing around. I also like that this example is in the woods and secret, which is something we could emulate because Jack is Ava's brother so he may want to hide the fact he is hanging our with Izzy from her.

14. This is an actress that I thought would be suitable for Izzy if we were doing a big production. I have seen her work with Maisie Williams before in 'Cyberbully' and I thought they would be good together as they have the natural chemistry of best friends.

15. For the mise-en-scene in Ava's room, we could have cards and balloons and gifts that show people are sympathising her, and often people who are unwell are brought gifts like this.

16. In this shot from 'Submarine', I really like that the two are a silhouette with a sunset in the background. It could show that they are arguing as they are in the dark and the sun going down could be something to do with Ava has passed on as it seems very heavenly. This would be a scene fairly close to the end of the film if we were too make a feature length.

17. We could include establishing shots of suburban houses like this to show how the girls live fairly normal lives. I also thought we could have a window that you can see from the outside is lit up with fairy lights, conveying that it is Ava's room.

18. Because of youth involvement with technology today, we could try and include a shot of them face-timing each other as this is something close friends will do often. It also is relate able for our target audience. I think we could place this at the start of the trailer when we have a montage of snapshots, front camera footage and other shots to show that they are best friends.

19. This is an example from TFIOS trailer where one shot fades into another, They are slow motion actions of the parents running to Hazel and taking her to hospital. I like the use of these editing techniques together as it shows the drama and I think it could be an important feature to use in our trailer to convey the genre.

20. Many teenagers will go to parties so a scene we could have in our film is where the three, or just Izzy and Jack, end up going to the biggest party of the year. Although a big party/prom location may be hard to set up but it would be achievable if set up like a house party and we use our friends as extras.

21. Ansel Elgort is an actor that I thought would be suitable for the role of Jack because he is seen as the heartthrob, and Jack has a bad boy role at school so he attracts lots of girls. The actor is also older than the other two I would have cast, and has been in many teen dramas including: TFIOS and a cameo in Paper Towns

22. I like this shot in 'Me and Earl and The Dying Girl' because her smile and pink wig show that she is positive and full of personality despite that she has cancer and has lost her hair. This will happen to Ava and I think having a brightly coloured wig can convey her loud personality even when she is not feeling well, while also fitting with the conventions of films where someone has cancer.
