Conventions of a Teen Drama:

Cliques:
They are a necessary part of a teen drama and are stereotypical, even if the movie itself isn't stereotypical, and there will be some form of segregation such as someone being different to the rest.
Types of cliques include: jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, goths, loners, arty people, stoners, people who don't have a clique. Some teen movies will draw attention to groups like these in high school such as Mean Girls and The Breakfast Club

Themes:

Two main characters are usually opposites (Paper Towns, The Breakfast Club)

Narrative:
The main character usually does a voiceover for their inside feelings, this is often also featured in the trailers. Mean Girls is a good example where the voiceover is used throughout the movie and not just the start.
